Garden

2026 has begun

Back in Utah we went whole hog on the homesteading vibe, a tenth of an acre of vegetable garden with corn, tomatoes, pumpkins and all kinds of other things. It would have completely failed if it hadn’t been for our roommate that had been raised on a farm and did most of the work. We did a lot of canning, baking, and making soaps.

Now that we are in North Carolina and a completely different climate, growing season, and work schedule we have to temper our expectations. We started with two raised beds, 3’x6′. I’m growing Moon and Stars Watermelons as well as Crenshaw melons, three tomato plants, three pepper plants, various companion plants as well as pie pumpkins and herbs. Got a compost bin for the kitchen and the yard, and plans to put in more beds gradually over the years. Next project is going to be a strawberry tower and patch for the melons.
